Intramurals
It is amazing what opening up the gymnasium can do during lunch hour. It creates more choice for the students at a small cost. Intramurals is a wonderful program to start in any school or community as it allows students to experience organized games that are not always accessible outside on the playground. All you need is a supervisor, a gym, and simple activities. Try to stick with common activities to encourage more participation and lessen instructional time.
Remember, less instructions - more playing.

Having the choice of going outside or staying in allowed students to choose their involvement.

It might be more difficult to play organized games with the younger students. Another option is to divide students into smaller groups or play a game where the whole class can participate at once. The picture on the right show students playing "Junk Yard" where they simply had to get the junk (the ball) off their side of the yard. The younger ones enjoy this simple game because they were able to control their involvement in the game. It also maximizes the amount of 'touches' when more balls are added into the game.
